The French label Irie Ites has reached into reggae's exalted past for a new rhythm based on John Holt and Phil Pratt's eerie classic Strange Things.
Fashioned at Anchor studio in Jamaica by Bongo Herman, Earl Chinna Smith and Mafia & Fluxy, and mixed by Calvin So So Francis and Jericho, this Strange Things stays respectfully close the original in its arrangements. The result is a powerful and versatile one drop backing built around its iconic depth charge bass motif.
Holt himself has lent a recut of his 1971 hit. The other vocalists comprise a choice assemblage of modern roots greats including Junior Kelly, Sizzla, Lutan Fyah, Chezidek, up and comers Lorenzo, Sena and Ras Bean and even veteran deejay Trinity.
In a response to the very real issue of piracy Irie Ites have only sent a megamix to promote this series so it's hard to pick a winner from what sound like many strong cuts.
The Strange Things rhythm will be out on vinyl and for download in April. Miss it if you dare...
