Ky-mani_marley_costa_rica.jpg

Costa Rica: The 2012 installment of "Carnival Puntarenas," the third of the three "major" festivals of the season in Puntarenas, Costa Rica, proved to be another spectacular affair for the more than 40,000 music lovers who converged for the beach side concert in the capital city to see Jamaican reggae star Ky-mani Marley set the day to music.

When the young Marley, son of reggae icon Bob Marley, hit the stage backed the band Konfrontation, excitement and pandemonium broke out in anticipation of the tasty musical treat that was to follow. Marley blazed the stage for well over 120 minutes, delivering a dynamic litany of songs, from his father's repertoire as well as some from his own catalogue. The multi talented singer proved his relevance with favourites like 'Iron Lion Zion,' 'Is This Love,' 'One Love,' 'Get up Stand Up,' 'No Woman No Cry,' 'I Shot the Sheriff' and originals like 'Who We Are,' 'Rasta Love,' 'Ska-Ba-Dar' and 'Dear Dad' - a song that pulls at the heartstrings of anybody who has lost a loved one.

Ky-mani's humble yet high-energy style of delivery demonstrated that it was really about the music and exceeding fans' expectations. He was inundated with requests for autographs and how he managed to sign them while performing is baffling. Pocketbooks and shirts were only a few of the articles patrons threw on stage for signatures.

Two encore performances later, the band was all set for shutdown, Ky-mani however obliged fans with a third and final encore performance. When he segued into the reggae anthem "One Love" the sea of patrons, obviously beguiled, appeared to be in a musical trance.

"The picturesque view of thousands singing all the songs word for word, knowing they neither spoke nor understood English demonstrates one thing, that the universal language spoken today is the language of love" Ms. Lexy Brooks of VIP Connected Entertainment said moments after Ky-mani left the stage.

Marley, who is working on a new album, from which a single will be released this summer, is also making time for his latest project "Love Over All Foundation" (L.O.A.F.) an organization he is spearheading to assist his Alma Mata, Falmouth All Age School, along with a number of schools in Jamaica.

"I am trying to assist kids in Jamaica who, though obviously eager to learn, don't have many of the basic tools such as lunch money, school supplies, computers and desks. I have donated some of these items but would love to put a program in place where the efforts are ongoing" he said.

Ky-mani personifies the name "Marley" by continuing to maintain the highest professional standards through music and the love of his fellow man, something Bob would undoubtedly be proud of. The Marley legacy clearly, continues through his children.

Voicemail_reggae_group_new_photo.jpg

Jamaican dancehall reggae outfit Voicemail recently completed work on its latest album Next Level which is to be released by Captive Music.

The album which is set for release later this year is led by the first single I Got Love which has now gone into rotation on Germany's Big FM pop radio station.

Voicemail members Kevin Blair and Craig Jackson recently did the promotional rounds in New York City which was completed by a photo shoot and recording sessions. They also did a number of interviews to promote the upcoming project.

Early response to the I Got Love single has been positive. A popular blog compared the track to the style of international artiste Sean Kingston and described it as a summer smash.

Voicemail received great feedback from underground blogs as well as from mass media for their latest release.

The Voicemail members are obviously excited about the addition of the track to an international pop outlet as Big FM.

"This is a great opportunity for us to build an audience in a major music market such as Germany. We're significantly interested in a steady growth of our fan bases overseas, especially in Japan, Europe and parts of the United States", commented Kevin.

Craig added "I'm glad that music lovers in Germany appreciate our sound and our image. As a real authentic Caribbean act, we want to show the uniqueness of our home country Jamaica to people around the globe."

Known for hits including Get on Up, Let's Dance, Wacky Dip, Weddy Time, I Need You, Get the Money, Best Days of My Life and Gangster Rock, Voicemail has to date released four studio albums.

In the competitive "Song of the Year" award category, Virgo will go head to head again Laza Morgan (One By One), Beres Hammond (She Stop Loving Me) and the combination single "Live Your Life" by Richie Stephens and Gentleman which was voted "Song of the Year 2011" on Irie Jam radio in New York.

SPRING 2012 U.S. AND SOUTH AMERICA TOUR BEGINS THIS MARCH

Gentleman_diversity_album_reggae.jpg

Gentleman is a crucial component in the movement of international artists beyond Jamaica who are expanding the footprint of reggae music. NPR's Saturday Weekend Edition talks in more depth on a special segment about non-Jamaican reggae music and called Gentleman the "Eminem of Reggae." Listen to full NPR story CLICK HERE

With six albums under his belt and over one million collectively sold in Europe, Gentleman is long overdue for his U.S. debut of Diversity. The international version of the album already charted at #1 in Germany as well as #2 in Switzerland and Austria and is the follow-up to his Europe platinum-selling record Confidence. On Diversity, Gentleman stays true to his first musical love - roots reggae - and teams up with top Jamaican recording artists, including reggae lyricist and singer Tanya Stephens, the late Studio One veteran and dancehall pioneer Sugar Minott, Christopher Martin (Season Two winner of Jamaica's televised talent competition, Rising Stars) and producers Don Corelone, Red Roze, Shane Brown, Xterminator and Firehouse Crew.

Gentleman
One may not assume that the Cologne native and son of a Lutheran pastor would become an international reggae superstar, but Gentleman (born Tilmann Otto in 1975) has been drawn to reggae's revolutionary spirit and truth-seeking lyrics ever since he was introduced to the island's sounds. He immersed himself in the culture and music at the age of 18, making Jamaica his home away from home. In 1997, he eventually got his first break with German hip-hip group, Freundeskreis, after delivering a verse on single "Tabula Rasa" with his distinctive singjay style. Since then, Gentleman has had a string of solo hits and platinum-selling records in Europe. He won Best National Artist five times for three different award shows (Echo Award 2003 & 2005, Comet Award 2005, 1Live Radio Award 2004 & 2005) and has been nominated twice for Best Reggae Artist (Martin 2004 Awards and Reggae and Soca Awards). He has collaborated with artists ranging from pop superstars Pink and Destiny's Child to reggae legends Michael Franti & Spearhead and Barrington Levy. After over a decade under the label Four Music, he moved to Universal in 2010 and will release Diversity in the U.S. with VP Records in 2012.

Kereen_Gregory_gospel_artiste_jamaica_female.jpgRising gospel act, Kereen Gregory, aka KG, is eagerly anticipating the opportunity to perform alongside one of her favourite female singers, Carlene Davis.

The two are among a set of gospel acts scheduled to thrill fans at a concert entitled Ash Wednesday Praise, scheduled for February 22 in Kitson Town, St Catherine.

KG, who declares that Carlene Davis has been an inspiration to her, also noted that she welcomed the opportunity to get up close with fans in that section of Jamaica.

"Minister Carlene Davis' story is such a wonderful one; how she moved from secular to gospel with such grace and I am particularly impressed with how Sister Carlene handled the testing of her faith in God when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She has always been one of my heroes and it is a joy to share stage with such a powerful woman of God," KG said emotionally.

She added that it would be her first time performing in Kitson Town and, as such, "it will definitely be a night to remember".

KG, whose star seems to be in the ascendancy, has been quite visible since the start of the year, doing radio, television and print interviews, and winning over fans as she prepares for the release of her debut album.

According to her management, Butterfly Muzik Limited, the album is set to hit the stores by Easter and, as a result the singer has been in the studio working closely with producers to put on the all-important final touches.

"We are at the stage now where we feel confident about the quality of the product. Kereen has been working with a talented crew of producers, engineers and other creative persons and the result is just fantastic. We know that it has been directed by God from start to finish," KG's sister and manager, Claudia Gregory-Watson stated.

A 2008 finalist in the JCDC Gospel Song Contest, KG has been creating deep ripples with her Radikal Yawd single called Who Me You Mad, a song that boldly compares a personal and intimate relationship with God to the closeness of a man-woman relationship. It is the first single off her upcoming album and was produced by gospel artiste Prodigal Son.

Among the other artistes on the gospel showcase are Goddy Goddy and Sister Pat.

Breakthrough Dancehall superstar, Popcaan continues to build his international status as he's unveiled the official remix of his number one hit, Only Man She Want featuring Jamaican-American hip-hop superstar, Busta Rhymes.

The Portmore Empire deejay, who has enjoyed mass chart success within the last year, released the remix for Only Man She Want on Friday; landing his first major collaboration with a foreign artiste. Busta adds his natural, 'yardie' flare to the single; joining forces with the 'Gaza' deejay nearly a year and a half after recording a yet unreleased track with Popcaan's long-time mentor and internationally-acclaimed superstar, Vybz Kartel.

Busta Rhymes displays a hybrid style of deejaying and rapping during his 12-bar contribution on the record. In Only Man She Want, Busta Rhymes deejays, "Yuh nuh hear how di girl a bellow 'Busta!' yuh nuh hear how she a deaf him? Dem a cry now, from di way how she a lef' him, your shorty want me and you know it and when I'm left alone with her, sir, ending up with her any time she get up on it."

Busta continues his showcase of lyrical dexterity by rapping, "Some think it's inappropriate, baby I must propose it, let us f***, the juices get to spilling like a water faucet in the truck till the sweat will accumulate and drip up off it, laying back the Jimmy, let you kiss up on it."

The remainder of this highly-anticipated remix features the original vocals from Popcaan as he once again stamps is authority on the universal music scene.

Only Man She Want spent several weeks at the top of Dancehall charts locally, regionally internationally since its release, via So Unique Records on the Lost Angel Riddim last August; later landing a spot on the playlist of New York radio station, HOT 97 This was one of a myriad of number ones in 2011, joining the likes of Ravin' and Clean. It even sparked a thought-provoking counteraction from breakthrough female deejay, Tiana who released Only Girl Him Want last month, to rave reviews.

The official remix for Only Man She Want is now available for purchase on iTunes and has been launched across several YouTube outlets. It's one of several major accomplishments for Popcaan already this year as he's released the Chromatic Sound/TJ Records produced mixtape, Yiy Change while also unleashing the visuals for his latest number one single, Party Shot.

richie_stephens_reggae_singer_new_york.jpgNew York Classifieds: Veteran reggae hit maker and "Pot Of Gold" label head Richie Stephens will be honored with a "Lifetime Achievement Award at the third annual Linkage Awards slated to take place on Sunday, March 11 at the Macedonia Center in Mt. Vernon, NY.

The announcement comes less than a month after he was presented with an 'Achievement Award' at the 16th annual Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival in Trelawny for his twenty seven year contribution to the reggae industry.

Stephens has had a whirlwind year since he and Gentleman released "Live Your Life" last summer. The song topped charts in Florida, Atlanta, Canada, Jamaica and other parts of the Caribbean and was voted "Song of the Year" on New York's Irie Jam Radio 'Top 100 Songs for 2011,' ahead of Vybz Kartel (Summer Time); Mavado elilah); Popcaan (Ravin); Shabba (None A Dem); Popcaan (Only Man She Want); I-Octane (Ramp Wid ); Laza Morgan featuring Mavado (One by One); Beres Hammond (No Goodbye) and Sean Paul/Alexis Jordan (Got To Love Ya).

"I'm excited about the success that I have enjoyed since the release of 'Live Your Life.' Fans have embraced it all over the world and I am just thankful for the outpouring of love" the singer said.

Aside from getting awards, Stephens has been winning new fans with several electrifying performances in Germany, Holland, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Croatia where he was the special guest of Gentleman last fall. His most memorable performance was before a crowd of 750,000 in Poland, at the biggest festival in the world - Woodstock.

"The response when we performed 'Live Your Life' was just amazing! It was a wonderful feeling to see the impact the song had on everyone" he disclosed.

Stephens kicked off 2012 in Jamaica with a memorable performance at the 16th annual Jazz & Blues Festival, the same night that pop singer Celine Dion delivered a historic performance at the festival. He has a number of upcoming performances lined up for 2012 (including a few US dates with Gentleman), while his current single 'Warrior,' has started to make inroads on stations across the globe.

"Caribbean radio has embraced 'Warrior' and fans are loving it as well. Our next move is to take it to urban radio in the USA and Europe. This is a powerful song that I feel will do big things for us in 2012 and beyond" he said.
